Do I Really Need a Website?

You might be surprised to learn that I don't think every one needs a full blown website. However, websites are still a great tool for creating digital magic and sharing it with the world. Let's explore some good reasons for having a website and when it might be best to consider other options.

The Perks of Going Digital

1. Be Found or Be Forgotten

Remember flipping through the Yellow Pages, fingers walking the paper trail to find a business? Well, those days are over. If you're hiding from the online world, you're also hiding from a treasure trove of potential customers. Google has replaced the phonebook, and if you're not on it, do you even exist?

You don’t need to build a full blown website, but showing up in online searches is crucial. Create a simple static page. Sprinkle your business details across Google My Business and similar directories. A website ups your game by boosting your visibility and making sure you're not just another needle in the haystack. In a sea of competition, it's your digital lifebuoy.

2. Your Portfolio, Your Stage

For the creatives out there—photographers, artists, bakers of whimsical cupcakes—your website is your gallery, your stage. It’s where your work can take center stage for all to see. Sure, social media is like that cool party everyone goes to, but your website is the exclusive after-party. It's where the real magic happens, converting admiring glances into ringing cash registers.

If you ever want to monetize your craft, a website is your best bet. It gives you control over how your work is presented and how it's sold. You can turn those admiring glances into paying customers, or even charge companies to showcase their products on your site. It's your digital storefront, and it's open 24/7.

3. "Come Back Soon!" Made Easier

Websites are like digital spider webs, delicately designed to catch and keep. Capture emails, send out the digital equivalent of "We miss you!" cards (a.k.a. newsletters), and watch as one-time visitors turn into loyal fans. While social media can get you followers, a website turns those followers into a community, a family that keeps coming back for Sunday dinner.

When a Website Might Just Be an Extra

1. The Budding Entrepreneur

Just dipping your toes in the entrepreneurial waters? A full-scale website might be overkill. Start with the social media hustle—Facebook, Instagram, or another platform that suits your business. Keep it simple, straightforward, and test the waters. Once you've got a crowd, then it's time to consider if you're ready for a full blown website.

2. The Platform Nomad

For some, a website may overcomplicate things when there are already great platforms for selling or posting. If you are a crafter, start with Etsy, if you sell antique books, eBay might be your best bet. These platforms have done a lot of the work for you to get you started. Eventually you may find that you want to expand to a website, but for now, these platforms are a great place to start.

The downside is that while these sites are free to get started, they do take a cut of your sales. But for many businesses, the trade-off is worth it when you are just getting started.

3. You are in a Niche Market with Direct Customer Relationships

If your business thrives on handshakes, personal calls, and word-of-mouth, a website might just be a fancy decoration. Contractors, bespoke tailors, or secret cookie bakers—if direct contact is your jam, don't fret over digital real estate. Your phone and a stack of business cards can be just as powerful.

If you are selling in a direct sales company, you might not even be allowed to have a website so you might not have a choice.
